How to Have a Positive Relationship
The last blog post “Healing from Infidelity was focused on the troubled side of a relationship. This week I want to focus on things that can be done, to strengthen a relationship.
Many times talking about a relationship focuses around the negatives. Partners often have much of their communication about what makes them angry or upsets them as compared to talking about positive things.
The place to start to put positive energy in your relationship is :
1. Talk about what you want from your partner not what you don’t like.
2. Put things in a positive light
3. Be Specific.
Example:
Your partner doesn’t call you when they are getting home late and it really annoys you. Partners often say to each other “Why didn’t you call, you left me hanging, you never call and you’re really inconsiderate.”
That can be changed into:
I would really like it if you could let me know if you
are going to be late. Here tone of voice makes all the difference in the world.
Additional Tip:
Listen to the volume of your voice – are you scolding or is your voice raised?
In my next blog which was written along with my associate Dr. Ben Beitin we will give you a very simple “positive habit” that can make a big difference in your relationship.
